It's a known fact in the ICT (that's what we call it in Malaysia) that the slowest months are the ones in the middle of the year. And it goes the same for any other industry. Hence, needless to say, PC sales slow down, so goes to notebooks & servers.
So what does one do then? Well, they are restructure, downsize or outsource their operations.
At foresight, basically look for more "cost effective/efficient" way to run the business.
In a nutshell, DELL Penang's (Pulau Pinang), 2000-odd factory workers who assembles PCs, servers, notebooks/laptops are to be affected. That's a lot of rice bowls for CM, Lim Guan Eng to feed when that happens. Just a few months back, 1 major toy electronics company retrenched hundreds of workers leaving them without salary or career prospects.
Nevertheless, we hope to see a lot more development in months to come. Both in the Operations side of things at DELL and better products.
Rumours of a mini notebook has been quashed with the new DELL mini 9. There's been talk of a touchscreen and future revamps of a PDA. I would like to see how that PDA comes full-force with the mini laptops, UMPCs, and the likes.
